Thanks Nick for the heads up on this one. Julian Dibbell, writer, Wired editor and player of massively multiplayer (MMO) Ultima Online, tries to discover the legality of a year spent trading Everquest virtual items, such as Golden Runic Hammers. In April 2004, he declared to the IRS the $11000 in income he had accrued over the year. His tale of delving into the bureaucracy of the IRS to establish the status of his barter trades is especially funny, referring to the tax specialist he eventually spoke to as, “a bureaucrat transformed”. Play Money, the book of the blog, is coming soon.
